Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Surirella is Surirella striatula Turpin.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Surirella subsalsa var. tenuis (Mayer) Cleve-Euler.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), thin, fine, slender (Stearn 1973).
