The type species (holotype) of the genus Gigartina is Gigartina pistillata (S.G.Gmelin) Stackhouse.

Type locality: "Neuholland" ["This recently discovered seaweed, departing so much from the usual in its form, has been brought from New Holland and has been supplied by Mr D. Turner under the above name"]; (Esper 1802: 3) Lectotype (designated by Nelson & al. 2023: [illustration] “Fucus Radula” in Esper Fuc. 2: 3, t. CXIII, 1908): Notes: Epitype (designated by Nelson & al. 2023): New Zealand, South Island, Fiordland, Dusky Sound, Chalky Inlet, 14 Dec 2019, G. Keeler-May AST503 (WELT No. A034575!).
