Taxonomic notes
John et al. (2004) cite Melobesia farinacea J.V. Lamour. and M. solmsii Bornet ex Me Lemoine as synonyms of this species. Furnari et al. (2003) consider that some records of Fosliella farinosa and Melobesia farinosa could be referred to H. boreale.

General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
A cosmopolitan species found on various algae and on the seagrass Amphibolis antarctica (Womersley 1996: 261). In southern Australia plants have been found intertidally as epiphytes on reef tops, in tide pools and subtidally to depths of 15 m; they grow commonly on Sargassum, on various other brown algae including Acrocarpia, Hormophysa, and Zonaria, and on the seagrass Amphibolis antarctica; also occurs elsewhere on Zostera, Cystoseira foeniculacea, Udotea, Enhalus, Thalassia, Dilophus, Padina and Thalassodendron (Penrose & Chamberlain 1993: 296).
