The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cymbopleura angustata (W.Smith) Krammer.

Syntype localities: "Fresh water. Killicrankie, Mr. P. Grant. Raasay Earth." [Scotland]; (Smith 1853: 52) Notes: A lectotype does not appear to have been selected.

Origin of Species Name
Participle A (Latin), narrowed (Sreenivasa Rao 1965).
