The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Iconella bifrons (Ehrenberg) Ruck & Nakov.

Adjective (Latin), with two faces, growing on both sides (Stearn 1973).
