The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Navicula laterostrata Hustedt.

Type Information
Type locality: "Lough Mourne deposit" [not "Lock Mourne" as in Patrick (1959: 94)]; probably Lough Mourne, Co. Donegal, Ireland.; (Donkin 1870: 22) Notes: Massachusetts and Texas collections mentioned in protologue.
