The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Diploneis sejuncta (A.W.F.Schmidt) Jørgensen.

Type locality: Denmark: Hvidingsoe; (Index Nominum Algarum) Neotype: Nordsee-Expedition 1872; BRM; cat. no. 272/22 (Droop 1998: 343, fig. 20;[ fig. 3 (epitype)]) Notes: Neotype: Muschelsand [shell sand] von Solwig [Solswig/ Sölsvig, probably = Solsvik, Norway, (Droop, 1998). Epitype: Lochinvar, Scotland; E: cat. no. E2294/4 (D. sejuncta).
