The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhizosolenia is Rhizosolenia styliformis T.Brightwell.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Proboscia alata (Brightwell) Sundström.

Type locality: 20-30 miles from Yorkshire coast, a little north of the Humber; (Index Nominum Algarum) Type: Mr. Norman; in Acidiaea from oyster shells (dredged); (Index Nominum Algarum)

Adjective A (Latin), winged (Stearn 1973).
