Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Stephanodiscus is Stephanodiscus niagarae Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cyclostephanos dubius (Hustedt) Round.

Type Information
Type locality: Ukraine: Crimea (Cyclotella dubia Fricke); (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: As the figs [of Cyclotella dubia] provided by Fricke show detailed morphological features that make a certain identification of the species possible, Taf. 222 fig. 23 (in Schmidt et al., 1874-1959 is designated as type but since it is not obvious whether or not this fig. is "original material' as defined in Art.9, Note 2, it is uncertain whether this should be designated as a lectotype or neotype (H.Håkansson, 2002: 7, fig. 5, arrowed).
