Taxonomic notes
Babbini & Bressan (1997) suggest that this species is a synonym of Hydrolithon farinosum (Lamouroux) Penrose & Y.M. Chamberlain.

Distributional notes
According to Womersley (1996: 168) this species is widespread but many records require confirmation (see also Wilks & Woelkerling, 1991: 524; Chamberlain & Irvine, 1994c: 199).
