Type locality: West coast of France (Dawson 1960: 8). Lectotype: Esper, 1796, Corallina Tab. XII, figs 2, 3, and 4: Upper right specimen on unnumberd sheet labelled Melobesia membranacea by Lamouroux (epitype) CN sine numero (Woelkerling & Chamberlain 2007: 233). Notes: Woelkerling and Chamberlain (2007) note that the neotype of Chamberlain (1985) has to be superseded because the ICBN rules governing the selection of types have changed

General environment
This is a marine species.

Habitat
Occurs epiphytically on a variety of green, brown and red algae in southern Australia and has been found intertidally on rocky reefs and in tide pools and subtidally to depths of 42 m (Womersley 1996: 171).
