Taxonomic notes
Stiger et al. (2003: 8) note that S. carpophyllum has been traditionally included in the section Zygocarpicae but the results of their studies show that it should be positioned at the base of the Malacocarpicae. According to Matteo et al. (2010: 902), S. carpophyllum is the type of section Zygocarpicae and they also include S. turbinarioides in this section.

Section Zygocarpicae (Matteo & Payri 2009; Cho et al. 2012). - (21 Feb 2013) - Wendy Guiry

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Lectotype locality: Sri Lanka (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 662). Notes: Silva et al. (1996) recommend consulting Setchell (1935b: 7) for more information on the lectotype locality of this species.
