South-east Asia: Philippines (Phillips 1995), Vietnam (Phillips 1995, Yoshida, Huu Dai, Ajisaka & Noro 2002).
Australia and New Zealand: Queensland (Cribb 1996, Phillips 1997, Phillips 2002, Bostock & Holland 2010).
(as Sargassum setaceum Yendo)
Asia: Japan (Okamura 1936).
Taxonomic notes
Stiger et al. (2003: 8) note that S. piluliferum has usually been placed in the Australian subgenus Phyllotrichia but the ITS-2 sequence is exactly the same as the that of S. yendoi and close to other Malacocarpicae.
Malacocarpicae? Section Sargassum [= Section Malacocarpicae] (Matteo & Payri 2009). According to Cho et al. (2012: 479), S. piluliferum and S. yendoi formed a moderately supported subclade (78-87% bootstrap) with the members of S. sect. Sargassum. - (20 Feb 2013) - Wendy Guiry
