The type species (holotype) of the genus Chromastrum is Chromastrum virgatulum (Harvey) Papenfuss.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Acrochaetium tenuissimum (Collins) Papenfuss.

Type locality: San Pedro, California, U.S.A.; (Silva & al. 1996: 101) Type: FH; (Woelkerling 1971: 52) Notes: Material from the type collection is distributed in Phycotheca Boreali Americana, No. 741 (Woelkerling, 1971: 52). Collector: Miss S.P. Monks, Nov. 1898 (INA). Growing on Phyllospadix on the flats at the entrance to the harbor (Drew, 1928).
