The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cryptomonas is Cryptomonas ovata Ehrenberg.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Rhodomonas chrysoidea Butcher ex D.R.A.Hill & R.Wetherbee.

UK: Essex: St Osyth, in small ditch on salt marsh; (Butcher 1967: 42) Notes: Type not designated by Butcher (ICBN, Art. 37). Hill & Wetherbee (1989) designated Butcher, pl. V: fig. 2 as lectotype.
