The type species (holotype) of the genus Gelidium is Gelidium corneum (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Type information
Type locality: Shimoda (Masuda et al. 1995: 200). Lectotype: C. Wright; TCD (Masuda et al. 1995: 200, fig. 33). Notes: Original collection locality of the lectotype specimen is probably Shimoda, where the species grows abundantly on rocks from the lower intertidal to the upper subtidal zone (Masuda et al. 1995: 200).
