Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterocladia is Pterocladia lucida (R.Brown ex Turner) J.Agardh.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pterocladiella capillacea (S.G.Gmelin) Santelices & Hommersand.

Lectotype locality: Uradomi, Tottori Prefecture; (Shimada, Horiguchi & Masuda 2000: 16) Lectotype: August 1923; SAP (Okamura herb.); (Shimada, Horiguchi & Masuda 2000: 16, fig. 14) Notes: Syntype localities: Kashiwadima (Kashiwa jima), Tosa Province; Hatydyodima (Hachijo jima), Japan (Santelices 1999: 73).

Adjective (Latin), dense (Stearn 1973).
