The type species (holotype) of the genus Dictyota is Dictyota dichotoma (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Dictyota fastigiata Sonder.

Type locality: Port Phillip, Victoria, Australia; (Womersley 1987: 202) Lectotype: Wilson; LD; 49599 (Womersley 1987: 202) Notes: De Clerck (2003) notes that lectotypification was established by Womersley (1967: 211).
