The type species (holotype) of the genus Lithothamnion is Lithothamnion muelleri Lenormand ex Rosanoff.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Melyvonnea canariensis (Foslie) Athanasiadis & D.L.Ballantine.

Sauvageau; Dec. 1904 - Feb. 1905; [collected in] littoral region; PC; unnumbered, Sauvageau Herbarium (box collection) (Woelkerling 1998: 334) Notes: Holotype material also at TRH, C15-3210, includes slides 1012, 1056 and 1057.

Adjective (Latin), living in or from the Canary Islands (Stearn 1973).
