Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Gymnodinium is Gymnodinium fuscum (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Status of Name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.

Type Information
Type locality: Newcastle Harbour, New South Wales, Australia; (Bolch, Negri & Hallegraeff 1999: 303) Holotype: fig. 1: August 1997; from sediments; type strain GMNC02 (Bolch, Negri & Hallegraeff 1999: 303) Notes: Type culture is deposited in the algal culture collection of Univ. of Tasmania and at the CSIRO Collection of Living Marine Algae, Tasmania.
