Status of name
This name is of an entity that is currently accepted taxonomically.
Navicula scalprum Gaillon
Type locality: France: "bassins dans les ports de mer" (Turpin 1827: 310).
Pleurosigma attenuatum var. scalprum (Gaillon) Cleve
Navicula scalprum Gaillon 1827
Cymbella scalprum (Gaillon) C.Agardh 1830
Sigmatella scalprum (Gaillon) Brébisson 1838
Pleurosigma scalprum (Gaillon) Ralfs 1861
Gyrosigma attenuatum var. scalprum (Gaillon) Cleve 1894
This combination was first introduced by Sterrenberg (1992: 143) but was invalid at this time as the basionym was incompletely cited; Sterrenberg (2007: 495) validated the name. - (16 Sep 2013) - M.D. Guiry
This species was equated - with some reserve because of its ecology - to the freshwater diatom Gyrosigma acuminatum (Kützing) Rabenhorst by W. Smith in 1852. It has also been ranked (e.g. in the Catalogue of Tempère et Peragallo Ed. 2, slides 143 and 144) as the invalid taxon Gyrosigma hippocampus (Ehrenberg) Hassall. Gy. acuminatum is excluded because it differs in morphology and ecology, Gy. hippocampus is an illegitimate name. - (2 Jul 2011) - M.D. Guiry
No habitat entry has yet been made for this entity.
Valve moderately sigmoid, narrowly lanceolate, gradually tapering to acutely rounded ends, 90-150µm long, 18-22µm wide. Raphe sternum with single curvature, raphe angle +8 to + 11°, straight in the middle portion, gently curving and becoming eccentric near the apex. Central raphe fissures only just extending into the central area, crook-shaped and dimorphic (oppositely deflected to either the convexity or concavity of their raphe branch on the two valves of a frustule). Central area elliptic, symmetric. Terminal areas wide, occupying the entire apex of the valve, with an isolated apical row of minute foramina, at the limit of visibility in the LM. Striae transverse 18-20 in 10µm, longitudinal clearly coarser, 16-18 in 10µm.
A marine and estuarine species fairly frequently growing, sometimes as large populations, on marine mudflats and in saltmarshes. So far personally (Sterrenburg) observed on British, French, Dutch, German and Mauritanian (Banc d'Arguin) shores.
