Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Katodinium is Katodinium nieuportense (Conrad) Fott.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Opisthoaulax fastigata (B.Kirchhoff & Barbara Meyer) Calado.
