The type species (lectotype) of the genus Mastocarpus is Mastocarpus mamillosus (Goodenough & Woodward) Kützing.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Mastocarpus pacificus (Kjellman) Perestenko
Type locality: Sea of Okhotsk (Lindstrom et al. 2011: 680).
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
Lindstrom et al. (2011: 680) note that they were unable to obtain type material of this species. They consider it possible that this specific epithet will replace a proposed name but they expect that this species is a synonym of M. pacificus, which has nomenclatural priority. - (19 Dec 2011) - Wendy Guiry
