Taxonomic notes
Hughey, Silva & Hommersand (2001), based on ITS 1 sequence data and vegetative and reproductive morphology, showed that M. coriacea (E. Y. Dawson) J. Hughey is distinct from Iridophycus coriaceum Setchell et Gardner, which Hughey et al. (2001) confirmed is a synonym of Mazzaella splendens.
