The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Lyrella praetexta (Ehrenberg) D.G.Mann.

Lectotype locality: "E marga Graeciae" [subfossil marine material collected in Greece].; (Jahn & Kusber 2006: 532) Notes: Lextotype (designated by Jahn & Kusber 2006: 531): "[icon] part of drawing sheet No. 988 (Fig. 7), published as t. 19, fig. 28 in Ehrenberg (1854)".
