The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudo-nitzschia multiseries (Hasle) Hasle.

Origin of Species Name
Participle B (Latin), sharp-pointed, pricking, piercing, terminating in a hard sharp point (Stearn 1973).
