Type Species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Chondrophycus cartilagineus (Yamada) Garbary & J.T.Harper.

Type locality: Mogi, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan; (McDermid 1988: 232) Holotype: SAP; T1 (McDermid 1988: 232) Notes: Type locality: Kyushu I., Southern Japan (South & Skelton, 2003: 738). Syntype locality: Chikuzen and Iyo provinces (Fukuoko and Ehime Prefectures), Japan.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), cartilaginous, flexible but firm and tough (Stearn 1973).
