The type species (holotype) of the genus Rhizosolenia is Rhizosolenia styliformis T.Brightwell.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Proboscia interposita (M.Hajós) R.W.Jordan & J.Priddle.

Southern Ocean, sediments at 120-122 cm depth, 48 57.44S, 147 14.08E, south of Tasmania and the South Tasman Rise (Early Oligocene).;
