The type species (lectotype) of the genus Sebdenia is Sebdenia monnardiana (Montagne) Berthold.

This name is currently regarded as a taxonomic synonym of Halymenia actinophysa M.A.Howe

Type information
Type locality: Near La Paz, Baja California, Mexico (Dawson 1954: 274). Holotype: Feb. 28, 1911; New York Botanical Garden, New York Vives 20d (Dawson 1954: 274). Notes: Dawson (1954: 274): A portion of the holotype specimen is on sheet 649499 in the Herbarium of the University of California Berkeley.
