The type species (lectotype) of the genus Spirulina is Spirulina major Kützing ex Gomont.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Limnospira fusiformis (Voronichin) Nowicka-Krawczyk, Mühlsteinová & Hauer.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), fusiform; swollen at the middle and tapering to each end like a spindle; narrowly ellipsoid (Stearn 1973).
