Type species
The type species (lectotype) of the genus Laurencia is Laurencia obtusa (Hudson) J.V.Lamouroux.

Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Laurencia dendroidea J.Agardh

Basionym
Laurencia obtusa var. majuscula Harvey

Type information
Type locality: Rottnest Island, Western Australia (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 513). Lectotype: Herb. Harvey, TCD Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 236a (Womersley 2003: 457). Notes: This type locality was first recorded by Saito & Womersley (1974: 820).

Synonym(s)
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.

Taxonomic notes
Phylogenetic analyses revealed that the taxa previously identified and cited in Brazil as Laurencia filiformis, L. majuscula and L. obtusa and in the Canary Islands as L. majuscula all represent the same taxonomic entity, i.e., L. dendroidea (Cassano et al. 2012). - (30 Mar 2012) - Wendy Guiry

Distributional notes
According to Huisman (2000) this species is Australia-wide and is widespread in Pacific and Indian Oceans. Womersley (2003) notes that this species is widespread around Australia, usually in sheltered situations

General environment
This is a marine species.

Type information
Type locality: Rottnest Island, Western Australia (Womersley 2003: 457). Lectotype: Herb. Harvey, TCD (Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 236a) (Womersley 2003: 457). Notes: Isotype: MEL 1006997 (Cassano et al. 2012: 79).
