This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Colaconema variabile (K.M.Drew) J.N.Norris

Adjective (Latin), variable (Stearn 1973).

Garbary (1987: 138) lists this species as the basionym of Audouinella plumosa var. variabilis (Drew) Garbary, Hansen & Scagel (1982). Abbott & Hollenberg (1976) considered this species conspecific with Acrochaetium pacificum. Garbary et al. (1982) proposed it as a variety of Audouinella plumosa. (Garbary, 1987)

Type locality: Cypress Point, Monterey Co., California, U.S.A (Ricker 1987). Type: Gardner No. 4659; December 1920; on Laminaria andersonii. UC 266281 (Drew 1928: 174).
