The type species (lectotype) of the genus Cymbella is Cymbella cymbiformis C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Cymbopleura hauckii (Van Heurck) Krammer.

Type locality: “Muggia bei Triest, in einem Tiimpel mit Cymbella gastroides Kutz., und Cymbella naviculiformis Auersw. Juli 1885 leg. Dr. F. Hauck.”; (Hauck & Richter 1885-1896: No. 147) Notes: "Lectotype—Lund-Phyc. Univ. No. 147, Reimer." (Patrick & Reimer 1975: 38).
