The type species (lectotype) of the genus Porphyra is Porphyra purpurea (Roth) C.Agardh.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pyropia thuretii (Setchell & E.Y.Dawson) J.E.Sutherland, L.E.Aguilar Rosas & R. Aguilar Rosas.

Type locality: Pacific Grove, Monterey Peninsula, California, USA; Holotype: May 29, 1900; On floating Gracilariopsis sjoestedtii; UC; Setchell 5161 Notes: Sutherland et al. (2011; 1145) give the following data: Lectotype: UC 791973, collected by W.A. Setchell, 19 May 1900, Carmel Bay, Monterey County, California, USA (Krishnamurthy 1972).
