This is a marine species.

Type information
Syntype localities: "Esquimalt, on tidal rocks and rock-pools. Dr. Lyall; Fuca Strait, C. B. Wood." (Harvey 1862: 178). Lectotype: D. Lyall; TCD (Gabrielson 2008: 91). Notes: The specimen labeled var. normalis (invalidly published and replaced by P. lyallii var. lyalii) is selected as the lectotype of P. lyallii by Gabrielson (2008). Lectotype: Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada, January 1859, leg. D. Lyall.
