Type species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Pterocladia is Pterocladia lucida (R.Brown ex Turner) J.Agardh.

Type locality: Isla San Lorenzo, Peru (Silva, Basson & Moe 1996: 144). Holotype: At a depth of 5 meters. New York Botanical Garden Coker 59 (Dawson 1953: 77). Notes: According to Xia & Wang (1999), the type locality is San Felipe, Gulf of California.

According to Hatta & Prud'homme van Reine (1991: 375), the name Gelidium pusillum v. conchicola has been misapplied to this species by Weber-van Bosse (1921: 225 (Maumere, Flores record) and De Toni (1924: 155)
