The type species (lectotype) of the genus Haematococcus is Haematococcus pluvialis Flotow.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Balticola zimbabwiensis (Pocock) Almgren.
Type Information
Type locality: Great Zimbabwe, southern Rhodesia; (Pocock 1960: 23) Type: fig. 5, J: December 1957; rain-water pools on low granite outcrop between Acropolis and Valley of Ruins; associated with 'Rosy Rotifer' (Philodina roseola) and a second, much larger rotifer, also rosy; (Index Nominum Algarum)
