The type species (holotype) of the genus Zooxanthella is Zooxanthella nutricula K.Brandt.

This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Symbiodinium microadriaticum LaJeunesse.

Type locality: Key Largo in the Florida Keys, USA (25°06'06.1"N, 80°26'20.4"W); (LaJeunesse 2017: 1112) Holotype: isolated by David A. Schoenberg; isolated in 1977; from Cassiopeia xamachana; US; 223175 (preserved cells of the cultured strain CCMP 2464/rt-061) (LaJeunesse 2017: 1112) Notes: Type locality: Key Largo, Florida, USA (25°00'00"N, 80°50'00"W) (Lee et al., 2015: 158). Discovery Bay, Jamaica, W.I.; Florida Keys, Florida; intracellular symbiont from the jellyfishes Cassiopeia xamachana and C. frondosa (Trench & Blank, 1987:479).
