Syntype localities: "On the leaves and stumps of Zostera very common. Summer, Appin. Also sent from Devonshire by Mrs. Griffith. Mr. Harvey."[Sidmouth, Devon, England and Appin, Argyll, Scotland] (Berkeley 1833: 44).

Origin of species name
Participle (Latin), becoming green (Stearn 1973).

Distributional notes
Papenfuss (1964: 18) considers it somewhat doubtful that the plants from Fuegia is actually this species.
