The type species (holotype) of the genus Pyramimonas is Pyramimonas tetrarhynchus Schmarda.

Type Information
Type locality: Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, Antarctica (74º41'S, 164º07'E); (Moro, La Rocca, Valle, Moschin, Negrisolo & Andreoli 2002: 106) Holotype: Fig. 12 (epitype) 11 December 1998; Surface waters of a hole (2 m in diameter and 1.5 m in depth) in the sea ice. Salinity and temperature were 24.7 psu and -1.5ºC, respectively; (Moro, La Rocca, Valle, Moschin, Negrisolo & Andreoli 2002: 106, 104) Notes: Fig. 12 is on p.109 of the paper (Moro et al., 2002).

Origin of Species Name
Adjective (Latin), south, southern (Stearn 1973).
