Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), creeping, prostrate and rooting (Stearn 1973).
John et al. (2004) note that Stegenga (pers. comm.) has suggested that this species may be referable to the genus Colaconema and that Neto et al. (2001) have discussed the specific identification of specimens from the Salvage Islands.

Type locality: St. Thomas, Virgin Islands (Woelkerling & Womersley 1994: 69). Holotype: on Hypnea musciformis, from the harbour. C (Woelkerling & Womersley 1994: 69).
