The type species (lectotype) of the genus Hydrolithon is Hydrolithon reinboldii (Weber Bosse & Foslie) Foslie.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Porolithon improcerum (Foslie & M.Howe) M.Howe
Type locality: Montego Bay, Jamaica (Womersley 1996: 258). Holotype: M.A.Howe no. 4760b; 5.i.1907; on a littoral reef. TRH A14-752 (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 111). Notes: Illustrated by Townsend & Adey (1990).
No synonyms are currently included in AlgaeBase.
According to Womersley (1996: 259), this is closely related to Lithoporella melobesioides and further studies are needed to evaluate this. - (20 Apr 2009) - Wendy Guiry
This is a marine species.
On Botryocladia, Cladostephus, Caulocystis sp., and Dictyota sp.; also on rock (Womersley 1996: 259).
