The type species (holotype) of the genus Navicula is Navicula tripunctata (O.F.Müller) Bory.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Navicula ostrearia (Gaillon) Bory.

Type Information
Type locality: in oyster shells, Atlantic coast of France; (Index Nominum Algarum) Notes: Type material - France, Bouin, Baie de Bourgneuf, edge of oyster pond, at Polde du Daim. Neotype (designated by Poulin et al., 2020): PC, slide PC0608572 and stem stub PC0608573, with acid cleaned embedded material of strain NCC 497 (Baie de Bourgneuf, France); specimens from this collection are illustrated in fig. 1A-J: isoneotypes: BM, slide BM101949, stub BM001167853; BRM, slide BRM Zu11/17, stub BRM Qu154-1 (Poulin et al. 2019).
Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), fusiform; swollen at the middle and tapering to each end like a spindle; narrowly ellipsoid (Stearn 1973).
