The type species (lectotype) of the genus Goniolithon is Goniolithon papillosum (Zanardini ex Hauck) Foslie.
Origin of species name
Adjective (Latin), drawn close together, very upright, very straight (Stearn 1973).

This is a marine species.
Type locality: San Juan, Puerto Rico (Woelkerling et al. 2005: 106). Holotype: M.A.Howe no. 5715; 28.v.1903; mostly in shallow tide pools. NY (Woelkerling 1993: 156).
