The type species (lectotype) of the genus Trachelomonas is Trachelomonas volvocina (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trachelomonas caudata (Ehrenberg) F.Stein.

Origin of Species Name
Adjective B (Latin), fusiform; swollen at the middle and tapering to each end like a spindle; narrowly ellipsoid (Stearn 1973).
