The type species (holotype) of the genus Nitzschia is Nitzschia elongata Hassal.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Pseudo-nitzschia granii var. curvata Hasle.

Type locality: Norwegian Sea (66°20'N, 8°00'W); (Hasle 1974: 426) Holotype: G.R.H.; 24 June 1959; Univ. Oslo; marked specimen on IMBB slide no. 12 (Hasle 1974: 426) Notes: "Johan Hjort" st. 399 (INA). Hasle (1974) notes that a single sample was designated as the original material examined for this taxon by Hasle 1964: 32 but no holotype was precisely designated, at that time
