The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.
Status of name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Platysiphonia victoriae (Harvey ex J.Agardh) Womersley & Shepley
Type locality: Port Phillip, Victoria (Womersley 2003: 164). Holotype: Harvey; LD, Herb. Agardh 43373 (Harvey, Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 188F (Womersley 2003: 164).
