Type Species
The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Herposiphonia calothrix (Harvey) Womersley.

Type locality: King George Sound, Western Australia; (Womersley 2003: 190) Lectotype: on mid-tide rocks; Harvey, Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 178B (Womersley 2003: 290) Notes: Trav. Set 337 missing in 1952 (Womersley, 2003: 190).
