The type species (holotype) of the genus Polysiphonia is Polysiphonia urceolata (Lightfoot ex Dillwyn) Greville.

Type locality: King George Sound, Western Australia (Womersley 2003: 190). Lectotype: on mid-tide rocks. Harvey, Alg. Aust. Exsicc. 178B (Womersley 2003: 290). Notes: Trav. Set 337 missing in 1952 (Womersley, 2003: 190).
