The type species (lectotype) of the genus Trachelomonas is Trachelomonas volvocina (Ehrenberg) Ehrenberg.
Status of Name
This name is currently regarded as a synonym of Trachelomonas planctonica var. scabra (Playfair) Skvortzov.

Adjective (Latin), oblong (Stearn 1973).
