General Environment
This is a marine species.
Description
Plants up to 3 cm in height, heavily calcified, dichotomously branched. Axes up to 1 mm in diameter, with annulations, Medulla with elongate cells 15-40 microns in diameter, mixed with rhizoidal filaments. Assimilatory filaments up to 300 microns long, dichotomously branched; lower cells elongate, 7.5-17.5 microns in diameter; outer cells pyriform or subspherical , 5-10 microns in diameter. Plants monoecious. Spermatangia single or in pairs, borne on spermatangial mother cells on outer cortical cells. Carpogonial branches three-celled, slightly curved. Fertilized carpogonium dividing transversely, with both daughter cells dividing longitudinally to produce the gonimoblast. Carposporophyte hemispherical, moderately diffuse, up to 250 microns in diameter, with fertile filaments intermingling with sterile filaments, with terminal quadripartite carposporangia. Fusion cell present but not extensive.
