General Environment
This is a marine species.

Description
Thallus erect, up to 7 cm tall, attached by small discoid holdfast; main axes ellipsoidal in cross-section with constrictions commonly occurring around midfrond; branching dichotomous up to 11 times; branches averaging 4-8 mm long between dichotomies, 2-3 mm thick. Structure multiaxial; main axial strand up to 100 mm in diameter, occasionally visible to the unaided eye; pigmented hypodermal cells 5.75-11.5 mm in diameter, in 1-2 layers; epidermal cells (utricles) (4-)5-7-sided in surface view, 11.5-34.5 mm wide and 12.6-20.7 mm long in cross-section. Monoecious, carpogonial branches three-celled, borne on supporting cells occurring three to four cells below epidermis; hypogynous cell often producing one two-celled and one one-celled sterile branch, although hypogynous cells with a third sterile branch up to three cells long frequently occurred. Mature carposporophytes spherical, 185-295 mm in diameter with broad necks. Spermatangia occurring in patches, mature spermatia ranging in size from 2.3 to 5.8 mm in diameter. Tetrasporophytes unknown.
